[email protected]Getting started
How do I set up Focal Keys?
Open the Focal Keys app and follow Setup. It walks you through three steps:
- Add the keyboard: Settings › General › Keyboard › Keyboards › Add New Keyboard › Focal Keys.
- Allow Full Access: tap Focal Keys in that list and turn on Allow Full Access.
- Allow Paste: the first time you use it, iOS may ask if Focal Keys can paste. Choose Allow Paste. You can also set it in Settings › Apps › Focal Keys › Paste from Other Apps › Allow.
Then pick your tone in the app, and you're ready.
Why does it need Full Access?
iOS calls this setting Full Access, and every keyboard needs it to connect to the internet. Focal Keys uses it to reach our server, and it sends your text only when you tap Reply for me, Polish mine or Write an opener. We never keep what you copy, and we never record your typing.
Which apps does it work in?
Any app where you can type and copy a message, including most dating and messaging apps. If an app doesn't let you copy a message, you can still type your own reply and tap Polish mine. Focal Keys isn't affiliated with or endorsed by any dating app.
What do I need?
An iPhone with an up-to-date version of iOS and an internet connection for replies. Focal Keys is for people 18 and older. It's currently in beta, so join the waitlist on our home page for an invite.
Using Focal Keys
How do I get a reply?
- In your dating app, press and hold your match's message and tap Copy.
- Tap the reply box, then switch to Focal Keys with the globe key.
- You'll see “Replying to” with the start of their message. Tap Reply for me.
- Read the reply. Tap Insert reply to drop it in, change anything you like, then send it yourself.
What does Polish mine do?
Type your own reply, then tap Polish mine. Focal Keys keeps your meaning and makes it read more naturally. If you like the new version, tap to use it. If you prefer yours, tap ABC and your original stays as it was.
What are Hint and Flirty?
+ Hint lets you steer the reply with a few words, like “ask about their dog” or “suggest coffee.” With nothing copied, type a hint and tap Write an opener to get a first message.
Flirty adds a light, flirtatious touch when it's on. Turn it off for a friendlier, more neutral reply.
How do tones work?
Pick the tone that sounds most like you: Playful & Light, Classic & Confident, Bold & Unfiltered or Grounded & Reflective. Choose one in the app, and switch anytime with the tone buttons on the keyboard.
I don't like the reply. What now?
Tap the ↻ button for a different one, try another tone, or add a hint. You can also insert it and edit it before sending. You always decide what's sent.
Is there a limit?
To keep things fast and fair for everyone, there's a daily limit on replies. It resets every day.
Fixing problems
I can't find Focal Keys when I switch keyboards
Check Settings › General › Keyboard › Keyboards. If Focal Keys isn't listed, add it again. Then, in any text box, press and hold the globe key and choose Focal Keys.
Some apps and fields, like passwords and certain banking or phone-number fields, always use the standard iOS keyboard. That's normal.
“Replying to” doesn't show my match's message
- Copy the message again, then switch to Focal Keys.
- Make sure Paste from Other Apps is set to Allow: Settings › Apps › Focal Keys.
- Check that Allow Full Access is on.
- Links in copied messages are removed before anything is sent.
I see “Couldn't get a reply” or nothing happens
- Check your internet connection, then tap ↻ to try again.
- Make sure Allow Full Access is on, and that you've given permission in the app's Privacy & AI settings.
- Very long messages may be too long to reply to. Try copying a shorter part.
- You may have reached today's limit. It resets tomorrow.
Still stuck? Email us with your iPhone model, iOS version and what you see.
The keyboard looks wrong or freezes
Switch to another keyboard and back, or close the app you're typing in and reopen it. If that doesn't help, restart your iPhone. Make sure you have the latest version of Focal Keys.
Privacy and your data
Is anything I copy stored?
No. We never keep what you copy. Your message is used to write one reply, and it's never used to train AI. The full details, including how our AI provider handles requests, are in our privacy policy.
How do I stop Focal Keys sending messages to AI?
Withdraw permission in the app's Privacy & AI settings, or turn off Allow Full Access in Settings › General › Keyboard › Keyboards › Focal Keys. The keyboard still works for normal typing.
How do I see, delete or correct my data?
There are no accounts, and we don't keep your messages. To ask what we hold, delete it, or leave the waitlist, email [email protected] with the subject “Privacy request.” We reply within 30 days.
How do I report a reply that's offensive or inappropriate?
Email us the reply text (not your match's message) with the subject “Report a reply.” We review every report and use it to improve how Focal Keys writes.
Beta, feedback and legal
How do I join or leave the beta?
Join the waitlist on our home page, and we'll email you a TestFlight invite when a spot opens. To leave, delete the app and, if you like, email us to remove your address from the waitlist.
How do I send feedback?
Beta testers can use TestFlight's feedback button, or email us anytime. We read everything.
How do I remove Focal Keys?
Go to Settings › General › Keyboard › Keyboards, swipe left on Focal Keys and tap Delete. Or delete the Focal Keys app, which removes the keyboard and its settings.
Who makes Focal Keys?
